Electronic Technician Trainee
Duties:
As an Electronic Technician (Trainee), the incumbent is charged with the responsibility of assisting with maintaining the physical security of the institution through assimilating installation, maintenance and repairs of an array of electronic systems inclusive, but not limited to, PBX telephone switch, trunked radio systems, fire alarm systems, perimeter detection systems, programmable logic controllers and CCTV/DVR systems. These systems are critical to the physical security of the institution in preserving the safety and well-being of staff and the inmate populace.
Under the guidance of the institution's Electronics Technician, the Trainee shall assist the Facility Manager in all activities related to the design, procurement, installation, operation and maintenance of telecommunication systems and electronics equipment at the institution which will require the incumbent to:
Develop schedules for the life cycle replacement of telecommunication systems and electronic equipment, including telephone switchgear, radio equipment, etc.; maintain equipment manuals and maintenance schedules on telecommunication systems and electronic equipment; assist in providing training for staff utilizing specialized electronic systems.
With training and experience, will gain knowledge of the principles, practices, and special applications of electronic equipment as it relates to security, surveillance, and communication needs for Bureau of Prisons correctional facilities.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs' correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Education
There is no substitution of education for specialized experience.

Experience
You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Some examples of this qualifying experience are:
- Experience as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that showed progression in theoretical and practical knowledge of electronic theory, and of the characteristics, function, operation, and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic equipment.
- Experience in the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions.
- Experience maintaining custom electronic equipment which is continually being modified and adapted, i.e. calibrating, installing, troubleshooting and maintaining electronic equipment.
- Experience in developing policies, standards, and procedures for maintenance, installation, or similar functions, provided the work clearly shows that the applicant applied a specialized knowledge of the theories and principles of a variety of electronic systems or equipment.
