Trail Crew Member

Compensation: $21/hour

Location: Juneau, Alaska

Season: May 12, 2025 - October 2, 2025

Hours of Work: 4 x 9.5/hr days (Mon - Thurs, 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

Hiring Schedule:  Applications will be reviewed and interviews conducted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. 


 

We are seeking Trail Crew Members to implement our trail construction and maintenance projects. This is an engaging yet challenging position based in Juneau, Alaska and the Tongass National Forest. 


 

Trail Mix, Inc. began in 1993 as a group of volunteers who wanted to improve and maintain the many miles of trail in Juneau. Work is coordinated between the City and Borough of Juneau, US Forest Service, and Alaska State Parks. We are responsible for maintaining Juneau’s world famous trail system, consisting of over 250 miles of trail. We acknowledge with gratitude that we live, work, and recreate on the lands of the Áak’w Kwáan and T’aaku Kwáan on Dzantikʼi Héeni, part of Lingít Aaní. We honor the enduring stewardship these Indigenous communities model— rooted in respect, nurture, reciprocity, balance, and harmony with the Tongass.


 

Position Summary

Trail Mix Crew Members work as part of a team of 3-5 Crew Members and 1 Crew Leader. Crews primarily work in partnership with the US Forest Service, Alaska State Parks and the City and Borough of Juneau. Crew Members perform manual labor and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Work consists of creating drainage ditches, reconstructing trail tread, building structures such as retaining walls and bridges, timber and stone work. Crew Members are expected to learn and apply trail building skills, actively participate in training events, practice appropriate safety procedures in all tasks assigned, and use, maintain and repair hand and power tools as necessary.  


 

Crews work mostly in frontcountry settings, this means crews starts and ends each day at the shop. Projects are occasionally located in more remote areas where camping is required. Trail Mix provides a per diem stipend for projects that require overnight camping. Schedules may vary but generally are Monday through Thursday from 7:30am to 5pm. Depending on project work and location, other schedule variations may be implemented. While the staff at Trail Mix work to provide consistency throughout the season, personal flexibility is expected and should be prepared for when entering the term as schedules, times, and work locations are subject to change per project needs.  



 

Position Requirements

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States
  • No previous trail crew experience required for crew member position. A general comfort and knowledge of working/living in an outdoor setting is preferred. 
  • Able to sustain long days of intensive manual labor and physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds consistently and walking 5+ miles over varied terrain.
  • High level of self motivation and discipline
  • History of safe working practices
  • Photograph worksites before, during and after work to document on-the-ground work accomplishments and share these images/video with our media coordinator
  • Expected to bring their own outdoor hiking/work apparel including closed toed boots, pants, long sleeve shirt, and >40 Liter backpack. (PPE is provided by Trail Mix Inc.)


 

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous trail building / maintenance experience
  • Experience working with hand tools and power tools
  • Experience working with or willingness to learn machine operation and maintenance for trail work such as chainsaws, brushes, canny-coms, mini-excavators, etc.
  • Experience working with rigging equipment 
  • Ability to pro-actively solve problems, work independently, and be creative and resourceful 
  • Passionate about the outdoors and possesses a strong conservation ethic 
  • Be available for the full term of the position, May 12 - October 2, 2025
