Electronics Technician

POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Designs, constructs, installs, troubleshoots, and maintains electronic equipment and communication systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*

Position Specific Summary

The Electronics Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Environmental and General Services Department troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs fiberoptic and copper networks. This position programs and performs preventative maintenance on portable and mobile radios, base stations, system alarm monitoring equipment, backup power systems, and various support equipment. This position locates, and marks underground fiber optic cables, works with contractors and other departments to trouble shoot and repair damaged cables. 

Work is performed under the supervision of the Electronics Technician Supervisor. This position does not supervise. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Reviews and screens Arizona 811 blue stake requests regarding City of Tucson’s fiber optic and copper cable lines. Gains access to cabling and conduits at buried line sites, connects to Public Safety Communications systems and uses radio detection equipment to locate fiber optic paths requiring maintenance. Marks buried lines, installs whiskers to mark utility locations, and informs requestor of blue stake results. Records and adjusts fiber optic and copper cable actual locations on the City of Tucson’s digital maps.

Organizes and confirms fiber optic Light Interface Unit (LIU) pathways to test cabling, identify issues and ensure optimal network performance. Cleans fiber optic cabling to ensure minimal amount of optical loss.  Ensures contractors install new fiber optic components in accordance with Arizona 811 requirements and test network performance.

Repairs, diagnoses, and replaces fire alerting systems, public safety emergency phone lines, radio systems, intraplex system components, dispatch consoles, and other various equipment.

Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains faulty wiring and electronic components in city owned vehicles including lights, sirens, vehicle internal communications, and radios. Performs annual maintenance on vehicle internal communications including portable and mobile radios and programs and replaces radios as necessary.

Replaces network data outlets and terminates keystone jacks to ensure organized and clean connections on network cables at various city locations as requested.  Uses digital network cable testers to test connectivity and integrity when verifying repairs and installations.

Attends City of Tucson safety, department and unit meetings, and other required trainings. Enters labor charges and other related data in multiple enterprise resource planning systems. Optimizes productivity by maintaining the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of assigned vehicles, managing stock levels of equipment and parts, keeping workspaces clean and organized, and inspecting the condition of tool inventory.

Performs all duties and tasks as assigned.

 

Work conditions as follows:

Work schedule may include early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Work requires on-call shifts. Often works under the following conditions: exposure to physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but not limited to dirt, grime, chemical, loud noise, and unfavorable odors.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated experience performing Fiber Optic and Copper Network installation, testing, troubleshooting, and repair.

Two years of demonstrated experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electronic equipment, Communications Electronics.

Electronic certifications.

Full Hourly Range: $24.16 - 41.68 USD
