Assistant Project Manager

BASIC FUNCTION:

The incumbent, under the direction of a project manager or architect/engineer, is responsible for performing a variety of technical and administrative architectural/engineering functions relating to the design, construction, and modification of Borough facilities. The incumbent will assist in the design and management of various construction projects.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

1.     Serve as Assistant Project Manager on Borough controlled construction projects.

2.     Work with project managers and client agencies in confirming accuracy of project scopes previously developed.

3.     Assist in administering professional services contracts with consulting engineers and architects.

4.     Assist in reviewing construction designs, project drawings, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.

5.     Observe construction projects and act as "owner-representative" when so assigned.

6.     Assist in preparing reports and provide technical advice on the department's behalf on engineering and architectural matters.

7.     Maintain daily observation records and track project costs (e.g., change orders, payment requests, and balance of available funds).

8.     Assist in the design, drafting, and preparation of drawings and specifications for construction projects.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.     A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering or construction management from an NAAB, ABET or ACCE accredited college.

2.     One (1) year of facilities construction field experience in Alaska preferred.

3.     Demonstrated familiarity with personal computers and experience with Microsoft Office products.

4.     Demonstrated drafting capability with AutoCAD and drawing construction plans.

5.     Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED AT TIME OF INTERVIEW)

6.     Architect/Engineer-in-training status is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

1.     Knowledge of current trends and developments in the architectural, engineering or construction management disciplines.

2.     Ability to perform mathematical computations relevant to architecture or engineering and the capability of clear oral expression and comprehensive report writing.

3.     Ability to maintain effective, harmonious relationships with staff and the general public.

OTHER

1.     This position requires a criminal background check.

 

JOB CONTACTS:

Continuous routine public contact, continuous contact with employees at all levels of the Borough; frequent contact involving outside organizations/agencies, including Fairbanks North Star Borough School District personnel.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITY:

Does not supervise; experiences minor problems daily and occasional major ones that must be resolved on own initiative with little immediate supervision the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require serious effort to recover.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

General office where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions where work accidents/hazards are negligible; required to visit construction sites in all weather conditions, requires short periods of light lifting, pushing or pulling (26-50 lbs.).
