College Intern – AVFI Civil Engineering

Some of what you'll be doing: 
As an intern you will assist the senior civil engineer with capital project design review and asset management tasks. This is a full-time summer internship and may be extended with part-time hours during the school year. 

  • Participate in large capital projects during planning, design and construction phases. 
  • Research record documents such as plans, specifications and technical reports to verify existing equipment and infrastructure locations and capacities. 
  • Update fixture counts pertaining to sewer and water laterals. 
  • Prepare and edit an Excel spreadsheet listing all the fixtures by number, type, and location. 
  • Perform stormwater detention condition assessment for Department of Ecology Dam Safety program. 
  • Conduct condition assessments on stormwater drainage, water and/or structural systems. The assessment will lead to developing a project to address deficiencies.  
  • Assist with development and management of infrastructure small job projects. 
  • Roadway Asset verification, field verify roadway infrastructures such as illumination, road way signage, stormwater collection, and safety systems. 
  • Assist in gathering and formatting as-built information to be used for the preparation of facility master record drawings. 
  • Compile Asset Management data and enter into the Excel spreadsheet. 

Who you are: 
  • A student – You must be currently enrolled undergraduate or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) in a degree program such as in Civil Engineering or related field.

  • Use of Technology – You have knowledge on Microsoft Office products, with a strong emphasis in Excel. You’re able to sort data and stay focused when working on large data sets. You have experience with AutoCAD. 
  • Organized and proactive – You have excellent organizational skills. You’re able to read or quickly learn how to read drawings of building construction elements such as airfield markings, pavement, storm drain, water, and sanitary sewer systems. 
  • A communicator – You have good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills in order to communicate in writing and in-person with varying Port employees. 
  • Desired – We hope you have a strong mathematical background. Experience with water, storm and sanitary systems. Exposure to design and/or construction process. 

What else you need to know: 
  • Grade Review – The grade and wage for this position is currently under review and subject to change.
  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, in order to travel locally to project sites. 
  • Work Schedule – This is a full-time (40 hours per week) internship position in the summer with the ability to extend to part-time hours during the school year. Normal work hours will be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. 
  • Work Environment – You will work in an office environment as well as work in all types of inclement weather 
  • Limited Duration – This is a limited duration position and is expected to last no longer than one year. 
  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. 
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. 
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • COVID–19 Vaccination Requirement – The Port of Seattle will require that at the time of hire, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be able to provide proof of their full COVID-19 vaccination status, as part of the hiring process. This is a condition of employment for all positions at the Port of Seattle.
