Intern, Integration Testing - Clean Energy (Summer 2023)

Generac Clean Energy is looking for a motivated Firmware Intern to help design and test next generation energy storage designs. The successful applicant will join a team of highly knowledgeable and collaborative engineers. You will have the opportunity to solve challenging problems that unlock residential PV and energy storage systems at mass scale. This role entails ownership of firmware implementation, validation, and ongoing fleet improvements. The candidate will have aptitude for embedded programming and testing, and be passionate about bringing sustainable energy to the world.

The position is available in South Portland, Maine or Bedford, Massachusetts. 

Essential Responsibilities: 
  • Hands-on hardware/firmware bring up, build and execute component validation to deliver robust, functional code running on real systems.
  • Develop Python scripts to support semi and fully automated integration testing of firmware and hardware in prototype systems. 
  • Develop, enhance and debug new and existing real-time firmware in C. 
  • Create prototype validation plans and hardware test systems, including putting together residential microgrid and parallel battery systems for high performance backup applications.
  • Safely run hardware/firmware testing and data analysis of test results for PV and battery systems.
 Minimal Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a BS degree (preferably in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science).  
  • The ability to work 15-20 hours during the school year and full-time during school breaks. 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Capable after some mentoring to create useful Python scripts and applications to run tests, visualize/analyze test data, and automate the testing of new firmware with hardware.
  • Capable after some mentoring to deliver high quality C code in a real time embedded environment.
  • Excellent software fundamentals including architectural design, algorithm development, data structures, code modularity, and maintainability.
  • Good documentation skills including engineering reports and laboratory notebook record keeping.
  • Knowledge of soldering, test instruments such as digital multimeters, power supplies or oscilloscopes.
  • Familiar with electrical test tools like scopes, meters, and power supplies.
  • Basic knowledge of microelectronics, software, and/or mechanical systems.
  • Exposure to electronics, power semiconductors, magnetics, or power electronics thermal management.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a collaborative environment to drive tasks to completion.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job include are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus.
