Intern, Electrical Engineering - Clean Energy (Summer 2023) - South Portland, Maine

Interns will work on hardware and software development for a family of advanced power electronics products. The ideal candidate will be willing to work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment; has a passion for technology and renewable energy; and a willingness to take on new areas of responsibility. The successful candidate will see through multiple projects while working closely with other team members to accomplish project goals. There are significant opportunities for advancement within the company. Report directly to engineering team members, product technicians, and engineering management to assist with daily tasks and longer-term projects

  • Work hands-on with products through design, assembly, and into test
  • Follow test protocol. Collect, analyze, interpret, and report on engineering data
  • Test and assemble products, circuit board assemblies, cables, and wiring
  • Work with and provide feedback to design engineers on new designs
  • Work with Quality Assurance and Customer Service to help resolve issues
  • Follow and review safety, quality, and manufacturing procedures and specifications; help develop and support process improvements
  • Support incoming and outgoing product inventory tracking, handling and software upgrades
 
Minimal Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS degree (preferably in Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineering). 
  • The ability to work 15-20 hours during the school year and full-time during school breaks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Good documentation skillset including engineering reports, white papers, and laboratory notebook record keeping
  • Team-oriented practices and a drive towards seeing tasks to completion
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a collaborative environment
  • Direct experience with technical systems and environments. Ability to work in a dynamic office, and laboratory
  • Knowledge of soldering, devices such as digital multimeters or oscilloscopes
  • Proficiency with basic assembly and metrology tools
  • Basic knowledge of microelectronics, software, and/or mechanical systems
  • Experience with databases, data entry, and data analysis
  • Experience with system modeling and data analysis in MATLAB and/or Python strongly preferred. 
  • Ability to run scripts from a PC, where programming in embedded C is a plus
  • Mechanical and electrical design skills including 3D CAD, schematics, and PCB layout
  • Exposure to electronics, power semiconductors, magnetics, and thermal management
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about clean energy and new technology
  • Experience with startups and rapidly-scaling companies
  • Demonstrated interest in distributed energy systems, PV, wind, or other energy generation and battery storage

Physical demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job include are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
