The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Materials & Research, has a full time vacancy for a Geotechnical Engineer (Civil Engineer I – III). 

Summary:
CIVIL ENGINEER I: To assist in the coordination and supervision of geological and geotechnical activities during the planning, design, construction, and maintenance phases of statewide civil engineering projects. To perform entry-level engineering assessments and analyses, field monitoring and review to ensure compliance with engineering plans, specifications, and related technical standards.
CIVIL ENGINEER II: To coordinate and supervise geological and geotechnical activities during the planning, design, construction, and maintenance phases of statewide civil engineering projects. To perform basic engineering assessments and analyses, field monitoring and review to ensure compliance with engineering plans, specifications, and related technical standards.
CIVIL ENGINEER III: To coordinate and supervise geological and geotechnical activities during the planning, design, construction, and maintenance phases of statewide civil engineering projects. To provide engineering assessments and analyses, field monitoring and review to ensure compliance with engineering plans, specifications, and related technical standards.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
CIVIL ENGINEER I:
  • Performs a wide variety of geological and geotechnical engineering duties including site reconnaissance, rock cut condition assessments, and subsurface investigations.
  • Collects and coordinates laboratory testing in support of field explorations.
  • Prepares basic engineering evaluations, calculations, and designs for, but not limited to, rock and earth slopes, reinforced slopes and walls, and shallow and deep foundations.
  • Plans and coordinates design-phase subsurface exploration programs including utility clearance and field inspection when required. Supervises the work of contracted drillers.
  • Prepares draft reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for review others.
  • Utilizes various equipment and tools including GPS, GIS, gINT software, and Access or related databases to facilitate the efficient collection and documentation of geological and geotechnical data at a project and statewide level.
  • Supports the implementation of geological or geotechnical engineering recommendations during the construction phase of projects including instrumentation, blasting and vibration control plans, and groundwater monitoring activities to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
 
CIVIL ENGINEER II:
  • Performs a wide variety of geological and geotechnical engineering duties including site reconnaissance, rock cut condition assessments, subsurface investigations, foundation analyses and design.
  • Conducts geophysical investigations and other studies to provide data for design and construction.
  • Collects and coordinates laboratory testing in support of field explorations.
  • Performs engineering evaluations, calculations, and designs for, but not limited to, rock and earth slopes, reinforced slopes and walls, and shallow and deep foundations.
  • Plans and coordinates design-phase subsurface exploration programs including utility clearance and field inspection when required. Supervises the work of contracted drillers and geotechnical consultants/inspectors.
  • Provides project related geological and geotechnical engineering recommendations to senior staff and external agencies. Prepares own or reviews other’s draft reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Utilizes various equipment and tools including GPS, GIS, gINT software, and Access or related databases to facilitate the efficient collection and documentation of geological and geotechnical data at a project and statewide level.
  • Assists in the implementation of geological or geotechnical engineering recommendations during the construction phase of projects including instrumentation, blasting and vibration control plans, and groundwater monitoring activities to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
  • Coordinates and communicates with other bureaus, government agencies, utility companies, contractors, and landowners in performance of assigned duties.
 
CIVIL ENGINEER III:
  • Coordinates and performs a wide variety of geological and geotechnical engineering duties including site reconnaissance, rock cut condition assessments, subsurface investigations, foundation analyses and design.
  • Reviews, interprets, and classifies geological and geotechnical conditions and data needed for the proper design and construction of civil engineering projects. Conducts geophysical investigations and other studies to provide data for design and construction. Coordinates laboratory testing as appropriate.
  • Performs complex engineering evaluations, calculations, and designs for, but not limited to, rock and earth slopes, reinforced slopes and walls, and shallow and deep foundations. 
  • Plans and coordinates design-phase subsurface exploration programs including utility clearance and field inspection when required. Supervises the work of contracted drillers and geotechnical consultants/inspectors.
  • Provides project related geological and geotechnical engineering recommendations to senior staff and external agencies. Prepares professional reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Makes oral presentations of findings and recommendations as needed.
  • Reviews technical reports, detailed plans and specifications of civil engineering projects to assure compliance with expected standards.
  • Utilizes various equipment and tools including GPS, GIS, gINT software, and Access or related databases to facilitate the efficient collection and documentation of geological and geotechnical data at a project and statewide level.
  • Implements geological or geotechnical engineering recommendations during the construction phase of projects including instrumentation, blasting and vibration control plans, and groundwater monitoring activities to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
  • Coordinates and communicates with other bureaus, government agencies, utility companies, contractors, and landowners in performance of assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
CIVIL ENGINEER I:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: No experience required. 
OR 
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: 2 years of post-graduate experience in engineering in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.
 
License/Certification:
  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. (Bachelor's degree applicants not possessing an E.I.T. Certificate may be hired at a one-salary grade reduction.)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel.
  • The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Minimum of nine credit hours of geotechnical engineering or geology course work. Knowledge of GPS, ArcGIS, gINT software, and Access or related databases.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:
Education: Master's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: No experience required. 
OR 
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: 18 months of post-baccalaureate experience in the engineering.
OR
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.
Experience: 18 months of experience in engineering at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.
 
License/Certification:
  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. (Bachelor's degree applicants not possessing an E.I.T. Certificate may be hired at a one-salary grade reduction.)

Experience: 4 years of experience in the practice of engineering at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two additional years' experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.
 
License/Certification:
