Juvenile Detention Officer

The Juvenile Detention Officer operates under the belief that all youth and families have the capacity for change while providing a safe and secure environment in an institutional setting. Successful Juvenile Detention Officers value teamwork and integrity in teaching skills to assist youth offenders in positive change to promote accountability, responsibility, and positive values. This position is Safety Sensitive.
Day, evening, and night shift work is required regularly and rotating, and you must be available to work holidays and weekends. Applicants will start on the 12 pm to 10 pm shift.
Successful applicants will typically be compensated at a rate of $19.43/hr. Placement at a higher starting salary rate within the range may be considered depending on prior comparable, directly related law enforcement or corrections experience in the state of Arizona. This position is non-exempt under the FLSA.
Job Essentials
- Conducts work on one of three shifts as assigned and is aware that shift assignments are based on the operational needs of the Department
- Supervises and maintains order and safety for all detained juveniles in a fair and respectful manner regardless of admission reason through positive youth engagement, rapport building, and crisis de-escalation techniques
- Instructs detained juveniles as to their rights and behavior expectations in detention and monitors and documents detained juvenile’s behaviors, taking corrective action as needed
- Develops, presents, and engages youth in meaningful transitional programming to provide skill development
- Establishes, monitors and maintains detailed records through the use of logbooks, paperwork, and electronic case records, ensuring accurate and complete documentation of juvenile’s behavior, attitudes, and actions
- Prepares thorough, detailed, and accurate written reports
- Applies physical restraint techniques or mechanical restraints as needed and only as a last resort when de-escalation techniques have been attempted
- Performs regular room checks on both floors when youth are in their rooms
- Performs crisis intervention functions to include verbal de-escalation, suicide prevention techniques and procedures, recognizing abnormal behavior, and taking appropriate action
- Searches people, clothing, mail items, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings and large outdoor areas, and confiscates contraband
- Knows and adheres to all department policies and standard operating procedures
- Transfers and transports youth on foot, in vehicles, or other forms of transportation
- Maintains the safety and security of detained youth in all areas of the facility, on the facility grounds, and when escorting youth outside of the secured detention facility
- Develops and maintains effective appropriate professional relationships with youth, co-workers, youth’s family members, professional visitors, and the public
- Controls access to and from facility conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time; operates and monitors surveillance and electronic security equipment
- Performs basic first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed
- Facilitates detained juvenile’s appearances for hearings in a courtroom or through virtual hearings
