Geotechnical Engineer

Have you wondered what’s beneath the ground (or ice) in Alaska’s vast coastal and arctic environments? And how the material you find there will support interesting—even world-changing—infrastructure development? If you have a strong desire to develop as geotechnical engineer with a passion for adventure, we have a role for you! Imagine yourself after a year in our growing geotechnical group supporting civil engineering projects throughout Alaska. You’ll work on a wide variety of interesting projects and state-of-the-practice laboratory equipment. You will prepare geotechnical reports, produce foundation design/analysis, slope stability, permafrost design, thermal analysis, and contract documents for marine structures, arctic structures, retaining walls, soil improvement, roads, bridges and general site civil development—all with an emphasis on foundation systems. Your logistics wizardry will be used to plan and manage geotechnical field investigations. You will conduct geotechnical and geological analyses, manage and execute design projects and budgets, and write and edit technical reports and proposals crucial to our clients’ decision making.
What You Need to Succeed in this Role:
  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam.
  • Experience with primary and secondary laboratory testing.
  • Experience in northern foundation design and permafrost/arctic engineering, or a strong motivation to learn.
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce well-organized, clear, complete, and concise technical reports that meet the client’s needs. Candidates will be expected to submit original writing samples for review.
  • Ability to travel for field work in remote areas, sometimes in adverse conditions (but always with breathtaking scenery) throughout Alaska. Some travel in other parts of the U.S. and Canada is possible.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Passion, enthusiasm, and boundless energy. You’ll need it to keep up with your coworkers!
