Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Internship

The Air Force Institute of Technology is offering internships at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

What will I be doing?

You will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to contribute to research to counter weapons of mass destruction.

This position is offered through the NEAT center at the Air Force's premier graduate school, AFIT.  NEAT is focused on technical workforce development for meeting USAF challenges that includes research, education, and outreach. Participant will interact with faculty, researchers, and students in a unique technical Countering Weapon of Mass Destruction (CWMD) distance learning program and develop their knowledge and skills in this area. The participant will conduct research and conduct analyses of radiological materials and develop realistic scenarios that will help students understand applications of science to countering nuclear hazards. The participant will participate in class sessions and interact with faculty and student in order to understand concepts that will enhance their  technological skills for the applications taught in the classroom. The participant may provide lectures in their area of expertise and collaborate with current faculty to build new topic areas based upon research results. Areas of application are broad, covering radiation health, human factors, nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons effects, detection, and survivability. Participants will develop program material to enhance the value and effectiveness of AFIT graduate education.

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by AFIT. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment

You will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

Candidates should be currently pursuing or have earned a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in the last 5 years.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
  • Degree: Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
