The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Design, has multiple full time vacancies for Civil Engineer I-IIIs.

SUMMARY: 

CIVIL ENGINEER I: Performs entry-level civil engineer duties during assignment to 7 bureaus within the DOT over an 18-month period, which allows exposure to a variety of engineering disciplines.
CIVIL ENGINEER II: To perform basic engineering duties for a variety of engineering projects.
CIVIL ENGINEER III: To supervise and coordinate complex engineering activities for a group of highway projects in Highway Design Bureau.

  • 1.5 Years of additional relevant experience = Associate's Degree
  • 3 Years of additional relevant experience - Bachelor's Degree

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

CIVIL ENGINEER I:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: No experience required.
OR
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.
Experience: Two years of post-graduate experience in an engineering field in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.
License/Certification:
  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. (Bachelor's degree applicants not possessing an E.I.T. Certificate may be hired at a one-salary grade reduction.)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel.
  • The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Specific degree and experience requirements must be tailored to meet documented recruitment needs of the agency or department. All specific minimum qualifications must be stated on the supplemental job description and approved by the Division of Personnel prior to posting at the agency level.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:
Education: Master's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: No experience required.
OR
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: Eighteen months of post baccalaureate experience in an engineering field.
OR
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.
Experience: Eighteen months of experience in an engineering field at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.
License/Certification:

Experience: Four years of experience in an engineering field at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.
License/Certification:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

CIVIL ENGINEER I:
  • Observes the inspection of construction materials to ensure compliance with material specifications.
  • Reviews and checks project records and documentation to determine quantities upon which payment to contractors is based.
  • Compiles information, performs basic design functions and computes quantities.
  • Reviews construction plans for compliance, evaluates proposed improvements and prepares design plans.
  • Observes batch plan operations, performing engineering material laboratory tests and reviewing mix designs
  • Sets up and operates survey equipment, tabulates data, performs calculations.
  • Checks and performs calculations for highway and/or bridge design layout work and drainage.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:
  • Compiles information, performs basic design, computes quantities and reviews highway plans.
  • Reviews engineering plans to evaluate proposed improvements and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Communicates with other Bureaus to gather information for highway plans.
  • Assists in training subordinates to increase their technical knowledge and skills.
  • Monitors progress of work to meet established schedules.

CIVIL ENGINEER III:
  • Analyzes, designs, and documents engineering tasks.
  • Supervises, trains and directs subordinates to achieve specific engineering goals.
  • Communicates and coordinates with individuals and organizations to gather input for projects.
  • Drafts technical reports and correspondence for project development.
  • Instructs and supervisors team members in the preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates.
