The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, has a full time vacancy for a Civil Engineer I-III.
 

Summary:

CIVIL ENGINEER I: To perform basic engineering duties, develop programs and plans associated with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges and other various structures for the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance.

CIVIL ENGINEER II: To perform engineering and administrative duties, develop programs and plans associated with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges and other various structures for the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance.

CIVIL ENGINEER III: To perform complex engineering and administrative duties, develop programs and plans associated with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges and other various structures for the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance.
 

Responsibilities:

CIVIL ENGINEER I:
  • Performs basic calculations for concrete, steel, timber structures, foundations, hydraulics, and highway approaches in compliance with office standards, state specifications and national engineering codes in order to provide safe, economical structures and highways.
  • Utilizes computer aided design and drafting (CAD/D) and other computer software to expedite engineering duties. Integrates CAD/D and other computer techniques for recording relevant bridge information.
  • Compiles natural resource and cultural resource information and data related to Bureau projects and prepares draft permits for the same.
  • Prepares preliminary roadway plans utilizing field data, survey information and roadway design standards.
  • Records and files Bridge Maintenance as built plans, design calculations, and other relevant project information into applicable files or databases. Maintains bureau-wide asset inventory.
  • Develops and checks constructions plans, establishes basic field layout, and performs inspection and quality assurance testing for bridge maintenance projects.
  • Compiles information, provides technical assistance and prepares draft reports as requested or directed.
  • Responds to emergency situations, at any time, to protect the transportation system and maintain public safety and convenience.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:
  • Performs design calculations for concrete, steel, timber structures, foundations, hydraulics, and highway approaches in compliance with office standards, state specifications and national engineering codes in order to provide safe, economical structures and highways.
  • Utilizes computer aided design and drafting (CAD/D) and other computer software to expedite engineering duties. Integrates CAD/D and other computer techniques for recording relevant bridge information.
  • Compiles natural and cultural resource information and data related to Bureau projects, prepares permit applications and presents information to resource agencies for the same.
  • Develops and checks construction plans and establishes field layout for bridge maintenance projects applying engineering principles and practices in accordance with state specifications and national engineering codes. Plans, schedules and coordinates detailed phases of construction projects to assure a coordinated work effort.
  • Supervises the training and technical education of temporary engineering employees. Supervises the proper development of projects and promotes an understanding of bureau policies, state specifications and national engineering codes.
  • Supervises the inspection and monitoring of multiple maintenance and engineering projects by crews in field. Checks and makes design and safety alterations. Carries out bureau policies and goals.
  • Records and files Bridge Maintenance as built plans, design calculations and other relevant project information into applicable files and databases. Maintains bureau-wide asset inventories.
  • Responds to emergency situations, at any time, to protect the transportation system and maintain public safety and convenience by the use of good engineering practices and by complex coordination efforts.
  • Develops preliminary bridge and roadway design studies coordinating extensive engineering information to provide design alternatives and cost estimates for review.
  • Investigates and makes recommendations for responses to complaints and inquiries from the public and government officials.

CIVIL ENGINEER III:
  • Performs complex design calculations for concrete, steel, timber structures, foundation, hydraulic, and highway approaches in compliance with office standards, state specifications and national engineering codes in order to provide safe, economical structures and highways.
  • Utilizes computer aided design and drafting (CAD/D) and other computer software to expedite engineering duties. Integrates CAD/D and other computer techniques for recording relevant bridge information. Records / files Bridge Maintenance projects for future reference by NHDOT and the public.
  • Schedules and secures natural and cultural permits with resource agencies to ensure all Bureau construction activities are performed within state and federal regulations.
  • Develops and checks construction plans and establishes field layout for bridge maintenance projects applying engineering principles and practices in accordance with state specifications and national engineering codes. Plans, schedules and coordinates detailed phases of construction projects to assure a coordinated work effort.
  • Supervises the training and technical education of temporary engineering employees. Supervises the proper development of projects and promotes an understanding of bureau policies, state specifications and national engineering codes.
  • Records and files Bridge Maintenance as-built plans, design calculations and other relevant project information into applicable files and databases. Maintains bureau-wide asset inventories.

  • Presents, communicates and coordinates with departmental bureaus, other agencies and executive management to facilitate bridge maintenance projects and to ensure bureau needs are being met within other Department projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

CIVIL ENGINEER I:

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: No experience required.
OR
Education: Possession of an Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.
Experience: Two years post graduate experience in engineering in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.

License/Certification:
  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. (Bachelor's degree applicants not possessing an E.I.T. Certificate may be hired at a one-salary grade reduction.)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel. The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.


CIVIL ENGINEER II:

Education: Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: No experience required.
OR
Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: Eighteen months of post baccalaureate experience in engineering.
OR
Education: Possession of an Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.
Experience: Eighteen months of experience in engineering in which position is assigned at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.

License/Certification:
  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. (Bachelor's degree applicants not possessing an E.I.T. Certificate may be hired at a one-salary grade reduction.)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel. The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
