Press, Politics, and Public Affairs Officer

The British Government’s Consulate-General in Boston is offering an exciting opportunity to join the Press, Politics and Public Affairs Team as Press, Politics, and Public Affairs Officer. In this role, you will be part of a dynamic international environment spanning the British Government’s extensive network across the United States and the United Kingdom, which includes the Embassy in Washington, the UK Mission to the United Nations, multiple Consulates, and other Government Offices—comprising over 900 staff and supporting the work of approximately 30 UK government departments and agencies.

 

As Press, Politics, and Public Affairs Officer at the British Consulate-General Boston, you will contribute to strengthening UK-US collaboration by shaping Britain’s public profile in New England. Positioned within the Press, Politics, and Public Affairs team, you will work closely with internal stakeholders such as the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST), FCDO policy teams, the British Embassy Washington, and other government departments, as well as with external partners including elected officials and New England’s press corps. This role supports the UK’s broader strategic objectives across economic growth, climate, science, innovation, and other subject areas and offers valuable experience in international engagement and cross-government collaboration.

 

We’re looking for a creative, collaborative, politically aware, and detail-oriented professional with experience in communications and public affairs. You’ll bring strong written and verbal communication, good judgement, research, and relationship-building skills, alongside a commitment to high-quality delivery, public service, and continuous learning.

 

Roles and responsibilities

Work closely with the Head of Press, Politics and Public Affairs to ensure strategy and deliverables in these three areas (Press, Politics, and Public Affairs) are met:

  • Communications (50%): Implement a communications strategy that strengthens the UK’s reputation and supports the Consulate’s objectives across New England. Manage social media channels, track analytics, and work with colleagues to deliver clear, engaging content that presents a professional, modern face of the UK.
  • Politics (20%): Identify, develop, and maintain a network of relationships with key stakeholders across New England across a range of subjects. Identify and implement creative ways to raise the positive profile of the UK in New England, including with future leaders. Assist with regular political reporting on key electoral races in New England.
  • Marshall Scholarship administration (20%): Oversee the regional Marshall Scholarship application and selection process in coordination with the regional committee chair. Lead efforts for university outreach and applicant recruitment throughout the year along with regional alumni engagement.
  • Visits (10%): Contribute to Post’s delivery of official visits by UK Ministers, Members of Parliament and other government officials through programme planning and briefing.
  • Must be willing to help coordinate Consulate events, including photography and event logistics.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Significant experience managing social media channels and delivering strategic communications.
  • Knowledge of the political make-up of the New England states and trends in the region.
  • Reliable, capable under pressure, an excellent communicator orally and in writing.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, relationship management and networking skills.
  • Strong ability to work across teams and with all colleagues, and skilled interaction with external contacts of all levels.
  • Ability to multitask with considerable autonomy.
  • Experience creating content for media channels.
  • Familiarity with relevant programs such as Microsoft Office 365, Canva, Adobe etc.
  • Legal status to live and work in the US in your own right, from time of application. Please note this role is ineligible for visa sponsorship.

 

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Some knowledge of the UK Government’s work and objectives in the United States, and the priorities of the UK Government.
  • Strong research skills and some familiarity with New England.
  • Prior experience in politics, the public sector, event planning, video editing, academic administration, press/communications, or an advocacy role.
  • Experience supporting/managing events.

 

All selected candidates are subject to background checks and will require a security clearance prior to starting work.

 

Eligibility

You must have the right to live and work in the US in order to take up this role, whether in your own right or as a dependant, and be able to demonstrate that when required. If you are not a US citizen, dual US citizen or US Permanent Resident, it is your responsibility check your eligibility to work for a foreign government in the United States, and specifically to work in this role at this location, and provide proof of your eligibility via an Employment Authorisation Document or other relevant document when required. The UK Government does not routinely sponsor work visas; the job advertisement will state clearly whether sponsorship is available.

Core Hours/Hybrid Working

While many jobs in the US Network are able to offer flexibility in terms of working hours, core business hours are 09:30 to 15:00 (in the local time zone) Monday through Friday.

 

Employees will be expected to work from the office full-time during the first 90 days of employment. After this time employees may work from home no more than 40% of the working week, subject to operational needs.

Working Patterns

This role is full-time at 40 hours per week. Please note occasional out-of-hours work will be required (e.g. to support on evening events).
