Industrial Engineering Intern
June - August 2018 • San Diego, CA
What I liked
My project encompassed the optimization of ordering containers also known as Mail Transport Equipment (cardboard boxes, wire containers and sacks) for two machines in the Margaret L. Sellers P&DC.
I appreciated seeing tools learned in the classroom that I was capable of using to carrying out my project. I was able to complete a full project from start to finish. From this project, I learned how mail is processed, carrying out a DMEDI project and how difficult it is to attain information from fellow employees.
What I wish was different
I wish that I could have had more time to more thoroughly carry out my project.
Advice
Interning at the USPS is a great opportunity for any student, especially one who is majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Working on a project from the start to end allows one to fully learn about one’s project and overcome obstacles whether it is with the project or other coworkers. I worked on an optimization project encompassing the ordering process of mail transport equipment/containers.
