Summer Research Intern

June - August 2019 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

It was really fun and I got to learn a lot of stuff. I got assigned one project to work on for my couple months and I learned so much about my subject area. Not only did I learn technical information, I got to explore the Ford Research and Innovation Center (where my summer internship was located) and saw other projects in other fields, met a lot of new people, and learned the office lifestyle. I would definitely recommend this to anybody.

What I wish was different

Advice

Make sure you use your time wisely. If you finished your work for the day, walk around the building and talk to people and take advantage of this opportunity. Also, Ford offers so many different options so when choosing one, make sure you choose wisely because you will be stuck with it.

What I liked

I loved Ford's culture and the Ford family environment. They placed a huge emphasis on soft skills and working together. Manufacturing Finance Intern

May - August 2019 • Wayne, MI

What I liked

My team and my project. My manager, supervisor, and fellow analysts were great. My daily tasks and projects were fun too. I really felt like I was apart of the team since my very first day. Everyone was so helpful and welcoming-even those who I didn't work directly with. When it came to my project, I ultimately was responsible for doing the work myself, but I did receive great assistance from everyone. They truly wanted to see me succeed.

What I wish was different

My summer housing. I lived too far away from the rest of the interns; further away from Detroit.

TSA intern

May - August 2019 • Allen Park, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to know the job that Ford hires a lot of automotive students to do. Along with receiving the same training that new hires do, we were able to visit other parts of the company and see what other opportunities there are.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have done an internship before my senior year. This opportunity lead to a job and it would have been beneficial to do with different companies.

Advice

If there are any companies visiting the campus, take advantage of it and interview or talk with them. Even if you do not know if you want to work for that specific company, this will give you an opportunity to find out more about them. Internships are also very important. It gives you and the company you intern with 3 months to basically interview each other. If you don't want to work for them, there is no long term commitment but you have gained experience that may help you receive other job offers.

Product Development and Enterprise Product Line Management (EPLM)

May - August 2019 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the hands on experience which I took from the internship as well as the background the company provided me. Building my resume has been very important to me for the past few years and being able to have worked on autonomous vehicles provides me with a competitive advantage over others. It shows I have worked on future oriented products and actively worked on the planning portion of work rather than the reactive portion.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have networked more with the individuals I worked with during my time spent. There were some incredible individuals who crossed paths with me.

Advice

I would like to tell any incoming students that it is important to actively seek work. There will not always be times where work is handed to you, and it is important to actively seek projects to fill your work schedule with. It shows your employer you are a good asset for the company and are willing/able to work. (Even simple day to day activities help, especially for those who are interns.

Technical Support Analyst

May - August 2019 • Allen Park, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the internship because I was able to receive training and work in the role as a Technical Support Analyst. I was also able to network with different people that worked for Ford in many different parts of the company. The interns were also provided multiple experiences to go out and participate in different events that helped us to get acclimated to the Detroit, Michigan area. During these events, I was able to meet other interns from different schools and in different parts of the company.

What I wish was different

I was very impressed with the overall internship experience. If I was to choose something that could have been different, I would have liked to shadow the position that the Technical Support Analyst (TSA) leads into. This position is a Field Service Engineer and we were able to have an informational session with one. It would have been even better to be able to shadow one.

Advice

I would go in and understand that you are going to learn a lot. I would also have the expectation that you will have a lot of questions and it is encouraged and even expected for you to ask them. Don't be nervous to ask questions because everyone there is ready and wiling to answer any questions that you might have. If you don't know something, ask questions to figure it out. Also, be willing to help others if you know answers to their questions because the management team is very impressed by that.
